Stay Safe: Don’t Dry Clothing with Flammable Substances

You’re out working on your lawn mower and your shirt or pants become soaked with gasoline. Or you’re hosting a party at your house and a clumsy visitor bumps into you, causing your wine to get on you. What do you do?

The last thing you want to do is to throw them in the dryer. Alcohol, gasoline, spot removers, dry-cleaning solvents, cooking oils and other substances are flammable, and can give off vapors that could cause an ignition or explosion.

Avoid putting in the dryer clothes that have come into contact with:
-          Paint thinner
-          Motor oil
-          Butane
-          Hairspray
-          Nail polish remover

Before using any product, see if there is a “Flammable” warning on its label and try not to get any on your clothing. If you do, wash right away and let the garment air dry. The clothing always will have to be air dried in order to prevent odors causing a dryer fire.

Plus, putting clothing with these substances on them in the dryer can set in the stain, ruining the garment.
