It’s a scary scenario. You’re just doing chores like usual,
and you put in a load of laundry into your dryer to dry. The next thing you
know, your dryer and dryer hose are on fire! Dryer fires are a very scary and
very real problem, and thousands of them happen each year. So
how do dryer fires start in Minnesota, and what can you do to try to
prevent them?
A dryer fire can start when a piece of lint hits the dryer’s
heating mechanism. The lint hitting the heater can cause a spark. That spark
can then ignite other pieces of lint and debris and cause a fire to break out.
It can be like a domino effect, and all it takes is one piece of lint and one
spark.
From there, the dryer fire can easily spread, even if you
don’t have many items around your dryer. For example, if your dryer sits on
carpeting, the carpet can ignite. But even if your dryer sits in your basement
on concrete floors, the dryer hose and dryer vent can also ignite and spread
the fire.
So how do you prevent this from happening? By cleaning out
your dryer’s lint trap after every load of laundry you dry. Make sure you have
regular dryer vent cleaning performed – at least once a year.
You can also take other precautions, like not running your
dryer when no one is home. Keep an eye on your dryer too. As soon as you see
any part of it that needs repairs, make sure you get those taken care of as
soon as possible. Also, your dryer hoses should be made out of aluminum, not
plastic. If your dryer hoses are made out of a material like aluminum, they are
less likely to burn in the event a fire breaks out.
Be sure you go over these rules with your family and make
sure everyone knows not to leave the house if the dryer is running. Everyone
should make sure the dryer is off before exiting the home for any length of
time.
